Reminders
- Please remember to call the school if your child is ill. This is important for small children who walk to school.
- If your child needs to take any medication following an illness, the office must have signed consent from you before being allowed to administer any medicine. Cough drops are considered medicine so they do need a note.
Agenda
Your child’s agenda will be sent home every day. This is an important tool to help your child learn responsibility, independence, and organization. The agenda is a place where your child will keep track of daily homework assignments and special activities going on at school. It is also a place where you and I can communicate informally. I might jot a quick note in the agenda. This is also helpful so that I know you are aware of the homework expectations and activities happening at school. I cannot stress enough how important it is to have a daily check-in with your child regarding his/her school experience. Please initial or sign in the ‘Parent Signature’ space each night you check the agenda with your child. I will check these every morning for notes, messages, etc. and your child will earn a sticker if their agenda is initialed. At the end of each week 4-5 stickers = extra Kramer Cash :)
Take-Home Folder
In addition to the agenda, your child will have a take-home folder that should travel back and forth between home and school EVERY SINGLE DAY. The back of the folder will have our class newsletter with important dates, what we’re learning about, announcements, and special reminders. The inside of the folder will have one pocket labeled “Keep at Home” and another pocket will be labeled “Return to School”. Your child will bring homework assignments, book orders, and important notices from the office home in this folder. Please help your child get in the habit of sorting papers and emptying out the “Keep at Home” side. I try very hard to help at school with getting papers in the correct pockets, but this takes a while (especially at the beginning of the year). Thanks in advance for any help you can provide with this!
Both the Take- Home Folder and Agenda will be stored in their binder for organization. This binder will also hold books from the classroom that your child will bring home every Tuesday and Thursday.
"Homework"
The best way to become a better reader is by reading! Research shows that reading at home every night for at least 20 minutes is beneficial to a child’s reading growth and stamina. Once the school year gets going, your child will be able to check out books from our school library, class library, take-home book bags, and some will bring their guided reading (daily instructional book) home, as well. Books from home or the public library are great, too! I know that schedules sometimes get tight, but PLEASE do everything you can to make sure your child gets that daily reading practice in (before school works for some, too). Also, at this stage in your child’s development, it is very important to continue to read aloud to your child. This counts as daily reading, too!
The sooner your child knows his/her math facts the better! Using fingers, counters, or a number grid is great! Whatever your child needs to do to solve the problems…s/he will drop this tool once it isn’t needed. Try to create games or quiz your child in the car. Be creative and have fun with numbers! If you ever have extra time, practicing math is always beneficial. There are lots of math websites and many on our class website that your child may enjoy! Your child will not have math "homework" sent home each day but most days but will have pages sent home showing what skills we are working on. This is an opportunity for you as a parent to sit down and chat with your child about what they are learning currently in math.
We will have spelling words each week. These are the Second Grade High Frequency words that second graders should know how to read and spell. We will have a test each Friday. We will practice these at school but feel free to use the ideas below to practice at home, too!

Book Orders
About once a month I will send home book orders. You may purchase books if you wish, but please address your checks to Scholastic Books Clubs or order online with your credit card. Here is a link to our class online ordering page: https://orders.scholastic.com/GY7LN The due date is always the 28th of the month.
Lunch/Milk Money
Please send all money in a sealed envelope with your child’s name and mine written on the outside in case they would lose it before getting to school.
Coat Hook
Your child will have a hook in the hallway to store school bags, coats, etc. These items are usually safe; however attractive items such as mp3 players, video games, and toys sometimes have a tendency to disappear so it is a good idea to leave them at home.
Winter Wear
During the winter, your child will go outside for recess several times a day. He/she needs to have all of the necessary winter clothes in order to play in the snow. Children without coats, boots, or snow pants will not be allowed to go off of the blacktop. This is required in order to make the rest of the school day comfortable for your child.
BirthdaysBirthdays are very exciting! We love to celebrate another year of living and learning! If you do send in a treat, please make sure they are pre-cut and easy to distribute. J
SnacksYour child will be much more productive at school if his/her basic needs are met first. Therefore, we have a snack/milk break each morning. I will send home a monthly snack schedule. Please keep in mind that snacks should be healthy and easy to eat (crackers, pretzels, fruit, etc.) There is a list of healthy snacks on the back of the snack schedule. Each child is welcome to bring in his/her own snack if allergies or diet are a concern.
Parent Volunteers
I gladly welcome any parents who would like to come into our classroom. Volunteers can help with such things as small group work, reading with a child, helping a student catch up after an illness, correcting papers, art projects, bulletin boards, etc.
SharingOur class will have a morning meeting every day. Each child will be assigned a day of the week for sharing for the entire year. On your child’s sharing day, he/she will be able to verbally share important news, events, feelings, or experiences with the rest of the class. This is different than “Show and Tell” in that it is all done verbally (without bringing in any objects). Many children have no problem coming up with something to share, but if your child is shy or has a harder time expressing him/herself in front of the class, this might be something you could practice at home or discuss in the morning while having breakfast. Children always have the right to pass, but sharing helps us learn more about each other so I try to encourage the children to participate when they are comfortable.
Star of the WeekYour child will have the opportunity to be the Star of the Week for one week. This means that your child will be able to share information about him/herself on a bulletin board in the classroom and bring in pictures from home to put up! Being Star of the Week also entitles your child to be the line leader for the week if he/she chooses and to invite a guest reader in to the classroom. You will receive materials the week before your child’s turn. Please complete the materials with your child. All pictures will be returned.
